Overview
Ane Manall is named in the public record as a great fortress of the Western Kingdom in the Second Quarter — north of the Mireland, east of the Wall. Chronicles remember it as both outpost and prison: a stone watch set where any host forced around the bog would have to pass.
Raised After Red Field
After Red Field and the building of the Wall, the Stewards raised Ane Manall just north of the Mireland. They judged that a true threat would need siege engines, and that such engines could not be dragged through the Mireland's clay. To go around the bog was to come within sight of Ane Manall's walls.
The Work of Tamos
Public accounts credit its great walls to Tamos the Stonemason, kin to the House of Calarph and descended from the master masons of Rion and Carsus. It is said he built the Western Kingdom's finest fortress since the days of the Foundation — work rivaled only by Calarph and the Stewards Hall. Travelers approaching from the west spoke of three massive tiers forming the eastern barricade and main entrance, polished stone gleaming for leagues in the setting sun.
Outpost and Prison
As the wars of the Wall faded, Ane Manall's distance from the settled kingdom made it useful as a prison as well as a watch. The Archives keep that double purpose in the open record. Further chronicles of the fortress in later days remain sealed.
